Our Vision
Our vision sits at the heart of Kahurangi School. It shapes our decisions, our priorities, and the way we support our tamariki every day.
Whāia te iti kahurangi,
ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei.
Pursue that which is precious,
and do not be deterred by anything less than a lofty mountain.
This whakataukī was gifted to us at the same time our school was gifted its name. From the very beginning, it felt like a perfect expression of what we wanted Kahurangi to stand for. It captured the heart of our kura and the aspirations we hold for our tamariki.
It reminds us to pursue what is truly precious, to aim high, and to persevere even when the path is challenging. It speaks to the importance of holding high expectations, valuing each child, and not settling for anything less than their very best.
At Kahurangi School, we believe our tamariki are precious. Our vision is to honour that by:
- Holding high expectations for every learner
- Encouraging children to aim high and believe in what they can achieve
- Supporting them to take risks, try hard, and keep going when things are difficult
- Helping them to see mistakes as part of learning, not something to fear
- Ensuring they leave our school confident, capable, and proud of who they are
Our vision is not just about achievement. It is about pursuing what is precious. It is about developing young people who are resilient, kind, thoughtful, and well equipped to take their place in the world, and who know that worthwhile things are worth striving for.
Our Principles
At Kahurangi School, our principles sit at the heart of how we do things. You’ll see them in our classrooms, in our playground, and in the way we work together as a school community.
They’re not just words on a page. They guide how we teach, how we learn, how we care for one another, and how we support our tamariki to grow into confident, capable, and kind young people.
Our four guiding principles are:
Poutama | Learning
We believe every child can learn and be successful.
At Kahurangi, learning is about more than just results. It’s about curiosity, confidence, perseverance, and learning how to learn. We want our tamariki to have a go, to keep going when things feel tricky, and to be able to talk about their learning and what they’re working towards next.
We work closely with whānau to support children to become confident, motivated, lifelong learners.
Whakahī | Pride
We take pride in our learning, our school, and ourselves.
At Kahurangi, we encourage children to feel proud of who they are and what they can do. This includes celebrating effort and achievement, supporting one another, and showing care for our environment and our community.
We want our tamariki to grow in confidence, self-belief, and dignity, and to leave Kahurangi feeling proud of themselves and their journey.
Ahurea | Culture
We value who our children are and where they come from.
Kahurangi School is a place where tamariki are encouraged to be themselves and where all cultures are respected and celebrated. We believe in manaakitanga. Looking after one another, showing kindness, and building strong, respectful relationships is a big part of who we are.
Our diversity is one of our strengths, and our school is richer because of the many languages, cultures, and experiences in our community.
Ahikāroa | Community
We are better when we work together.
Kahurangi School is very much a community school. We value participation, contribution, and shared responsibility. Our tamariki are encouraged to get involved, to take on leadership, and to look out for one another.
We place a strong emphasis on working in partnership with whānau and on building connections that support our children both at school and beyond.
These principles guide our decisions, our teaching, and the way we care for one another every day at Kahurangi School.
