Attendance at Kahurangi

Attendance at Kahurangi

Being at school regularly really matters. It supports learning, wellbeing, friendships, and a sense of belonging. At Kahurangi, we want every tamaiti to feel safe, welcome, and connected to their kura.

Like all schools, we are required to have clear plans in place that explain how we promote good attendance and how we respond when attendance starts to become a concern. The two documents below set this out.

They are here for transparency, and to make sure our approach is consistent, fair, and supportive.

Kahurangi School Attendance Action Plan

This is our board-level plan. It explains:

  • Why attendance is a priority at Kahurangi
  • How we align with the Ministry of Education’s Stepped Attendance Response (STAR) framework
  • The principles that guide our approach (including equity, manaakitanga, and belonging)
  • The roles of the Kahurangi School Board, the school, and whānau in supporting attendance

In short, this document sets out the why and the what.

Stepped Attendance Response Procedures

This document explains the how.

It sets out, in a clear and practical way, how the school responds when a student’s attendance starts to slip. It describes:

  • The different tiers of support
  • What happens at each stage
  • How and when we involve whānau
  • How support plans are created and reviewed
  • When external support agencies may be involved

Our approach is always supportive, not punitive, and focused on understanding and removing barriers to attendance wherever we can.
